The Employee Free Choice Act is the most important piece of labor relations legislation that is currently before the US Congress. It will restore workers’ freedom to form unions and bargain for a better life. The Employee Free Choice Act will rebuild the middle class and help to restore our economy. It does three things to level the playing field for workers and employers:
Strengthens penalties for companies that illegally coerce or intimidate employees when they try to form a union.
Brings in a neutral third party to settle a contract when the company and newly-certified union are unable to agree on a contract after three months of negotiations.
Lets employees decide how to express their choice to organize – either by balloting or by majority sign-up, meaning that if a majority of employees sign union authorization cards that are validated by the National Labor Relations Board, a company must recognize that union.
